The sun had sanked beneath the horizon, casting the valley into darkness. It would be a cold night; not a cloud could be seen in the dark sky. Only the bright stars. A massive wolf rested on a cold boulder in the Ashwinter dens, his brown eyes lazily observing the entranceway. Even with the moonlight Rorik was unable see anything past the entrance, only darkness and the silhouettes of the trees closest to the pack's camp. The large canine shivered and rested his head on his giant paws, his tail tucked close to his body.

Rika, returning from a recent hunt with other packmates, was a bit more excited than usual. Excited from the hunt? Excited from the group? Excited from to be 'home'? Eh, probably all of them. She held a pine marten in her jaws, and a red squirrel by its' tail. Also, lazily hanging out of her mouth. She followed the others, laying down her kills, and seeing as though everyone go their share, she noticed that in the aftermath, two brown hares were left over. So, she picked on up, and looked around for someone to talk to, or just somewhere to lay. Her head tilted as she saw her friend Rorik laying on the rock. 'Is he asleep?' She asked herself, before deciding to take a look for herself. Just in case he wasn't, she picked up another hare and made her way over.

The shadowed forms of his pack mates emerged from the darkness, silent and ghost-like. Rorik didn't even react. He simply watched his peers gather together to split their kills. One by one, each wolf took their share and returned to the dens. Except for one. Little Rika picked up the two remaining hares and padded in his direction. A small smile tugged at the wolf's lips. While he liked to be on his own, he did enjoy some company, especially Rika's. "Late night hunt, eh?" He said when she was a few feet away.

"Of course. You should sorta know that I'm always up for a good hunt." She inched closer to him and smiled, hoping up onto the the rock next to him. "Hungry?" She barked again, her mouth full of hare fur. She set them down in between them, and pushed one over with her muzzle, and then picked the other and set it on her paws as she lay.

Rorik smiled in amusement and rolled his eyes. "Of course, how silly of me to ask." He said sarcasticly. He shifted his large form closer to Rika for warmth when she joined him on the boulder. It was just for warmth, right? Yes, of course it was... Was it? He shook those thoughts from his head and started chewing on one of the hare's hind legs.

Rika, thinking almost nothing of it, pushed up against him, almost tiredly. Her heart was still calming down from the race of the hunt and excitement, and her body was heated from most of the movement that she had done. "Cold tonight, huh?" She asked, using her sharpest set of teeth, or her 'canines', to mite through the skin of the hare. The nerves had already died from the animal, and she had no qualms about eating right through it, even maybe if it did. She tried not to eat messily, for that would be rude. And. Well. Messy. After moving her mouth across her teeth and muzzle, she tilted her head and looked up Rorik. "So? What have you been up to while I was gone?" She barked softly, and left it at that.

"Nothing eventful," he spoke between bites. "Watched the sun set, patrolled for a bit; you know, what I usually do." He tore at the hare's hide, trying his best not to make a mess. The meat was warm, but the wolf couldn't help but shiver a bit. "Definitely gonna be a cold night."

"Eh, I'll be here." She chuckled leaning over onto him for a moment. Her head laid against his shoulder and she chuckled lightly. She bit into a piece of the side, and brought it to her mouth, and laid against his shoulder again. His fur was surprisingly comfortable, and she would probably lay there for a while.

Rorik grunted and rested his head on one of his paws and one of hers. His eyes began to droop and he released a contented sigh. "Looks like you had quite the successful hunt." He murmured. He was rambling now, sleep beginning to overtake his weary head.

"I'm sure that everyone got something to eat here in Ashwinter. There was plenty of prey and things today." She smiled and noticed his movement taking a large final bite, and set it aside to maybe eat later, or in the morning. She was getting quite tired from all of the excitement today. She nuzzled her head against his fur, and laid against his side.

He rested there for a while, enjoying her warmth and companionship. She was his only real friend in the pack: he didn't really socialize with most of his pack mates. He wished that they could remain like this forever, their warm embrace never to be broken. But time could not, would not, be stopped, and the night was growing colder. "It's late," he whispered softly, "and we'll freeze our tails off if we stay out here any longer." He lifted his head of their paws and gazed softly down at Rika.

She yawned and lifted her head up, tilting her head up, and now realizing how late and how cold it actually was, she shivered. She looked up at him somewhat tiredly, and tilted her head. "Even if we go in the dens.." She was stifled by a small yawn, "it's still going to be cold." She said, bringing a paw up to bring her fur out of her eyes.

He snorted. "We'll be less likely to freeze our asses off in there than out here." He slowly rose to all fours and gently nudged her with his snout. "Come on, it'll be a lot more comfortable on the dens... and a lot warmer." He spoke gently with a soft smile.

She delicately picked up the two half eaten hares, and smiled and nodded her head in agreement. She picked up her muzzle and nudged his cheek. "Had to nudge you back." She chuckled and touched his side gently with her tail, and hopped off the rock.

He watched the wolf pad off toward the dens, warmth blossoming inside him. He didn't know what it was, he never felt this way for someone before. Shuddering, Rorik quickly trotted after her, following her into the den.
